Born in 1979, Daniel Malecki studied painting, drawing, sculpture and graphic design in the Institute of Art in Lublin, Poland, graduating in 2004 with MA in painting. He began his active artistic career already during studies and has consequently pursued his interests in painting and performance. He held his first individual painting exhibition in Jazzgot Gallery in Warsaw in 2003, which was followed by his two politically powerful performances – “Ciecierzyn-Uluru” and “Black and White Eagle,” both shown at the White Gallery in Lublin.

His experience in painting and action allowed him to transcend the academic form of a diploma that is required in the Institute of Art. He made an installation – “Shelter for the Homeless,” which was built from his paintings intended as a classic painting cycle, with their function kept secret by the author. The use of paintings as the building material for the shelter for the homeless was a very refined and meaningful procedure.

In 2004 in the Lublin Performance Centre Daniel made an installation entitled “Dreamtime,” which symbolically marked the beginning of his long-awaited journey back to Australia. By heating 300kg of stones in the self-made stove and transferring them into the gallery space, he exuded the uncomfortable aura of heat and humidity. The loud hissing sound created by the drops of water falling on hot stones further contributed to the feeling of mystery and unknown that awaited him.

The current exhibition at Wilson Street Gallery in Sydney is his first public appearance since coming to Australia in 2005.
